A professional resole typically adds 3 to 5 years of regular use to a well-maintained pair. On quality shoes that are cared for consistently, two or three resoles over the shoe’s lifetime is entirely achievable, bringing the total lifespan well past 20 years. The key is not letting wear progress too far before acting, as damage to the upper caused by a worn-through sole is harder and more costly to address.

A few reliable signs: if the sole looks compressed or translucent at the ball of the foot, cushioning and traction are gone. If the heel is wearing unevenly and exposing the material beneath the outer layer, that needs immediate attention, continuing past that point puts stress on the upper and the shoe’s internal structure. If the upper itself is cracked, torn through, or structurally compromised, replacement may be the more honest answer. We’ll always give you a clear assessment before recommending repair.

Yes. Separated soles are one of the most common repairs we handle. Depending on how much of the sole has detached and the condition of the bond beneath, the sole can be reattached or replaced entirely. The sooner it’s addressed, the better. A partially detached sole that continues to be worn can damage the upper and make the repair more involved.

Not always. Loose or broken stitching along the upper, seams, or welt can often be repaired without a full resole. We inspect the extent of the damage first: if it’s isolated to the stitching, we reinforce or replace just that section. If the stitching failure has affected the sole bond as well, we’ll address both together.

In most cases, yes, within limits. Heels can typically be raised or lowered by up to about half an inch without affecting the balance or structure of the shoe. Beyond that, changes to heel geometry can alter how the shoe fits and wears. We’ll assess whether the adjustment you’re looking for is feasible for your specific pair before committing to any work.
